Worldwide Discussion: The People Join In
SHOULD WE CHANGE 'WHAT' PEOPLE
WANT OR 'WHY' PEOPLE WANT?

Are humanity's leaders missing the key to creating a newer world?

Is changing the world all about changing what people “want?” Or is it about changing why people would want one thing rather than another?

This is a major question facing Planet Earth’s politicians, business figures, spiritual leaders, and social scientists right now --- although very few of them have “framed” it in this way...because, regrettably, very few of them have deeply understood the nature of humanity’s current problem.

It is a problem of beliefs, not of behaviors.

There is a global conversation taking place on this website that is now heating up, with nearly 100 Comments posted beneath the last entry alone in this newspaper’s headline space, and I would like to direct its attention now to the nature of the challenge presently facing our species.

This has all come to the fore for me because of a Comment posted under the last top-of-page...

Interpreting Conversations with God

Conversations with God told us that humanity nearly rendered itself extinct once before. Barely enough of us survived to regenerate the species and start over. Are we at this same turning point again? Have we arrived once more at the intersection where theology meets cosmology meets sociology meets pathology?

Right now we are still embracing a Separation Theology. That is, a way of looking at God that insists that we are “over here” and God is “over there.”

The problem with a Separation Theology is that it produces a Separation Cosmology. That is, a way of looking at all of life that says that everything is separate from everything else.

And a Separation Cosmology produces a Separation Psychology. That is, a psychological viewpoint that says that I am over here and you are over there.

And a Separation Psychology produces a Separation Sociology. That...

Voice for the Minority

Two weekends ago, 9 people died in car crashes in the Central Florida area.  9 people in one weekend.  A spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said that most of the accidents were caused by aggressive or distracted drivers.

And while it is shocking to hear that 9 people died in car fatalities within a two-day period of time in a single metropolitan area, it is not altogether shocking to hear the reasons why.

Our roadways have become a dumping ground.  Not for our trash or unused items -- well, there is that, too -- but for our energy and emotions.  Whatever semblance of kindness and compassion we claim to feel towards each other seems to mysteriously vanish the moment we place ourselves behind the steering wheel of our cars.

But why is this?

What is this phenomenon?

When we gather in a shopping...

Hey, is anyone listening?

Last month in the United States saw the return of CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) in which the conservative political groups get together and toot their own horn and hold a straw vote as to who they want to see run for president in 2016. And as the reports on CPAC speakers began emerging, I was utterly amazed as how the definitions of some words have been twisted to the point where they mean exactly the opposite of what the common definition holds them to mean.

For example, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie stated that the Republican party is the party of "tolerance". Say what? This is the party who has, 50 times now, tried to repeal the Affordable Health Care act, something that the Republican party's 2012 candidate, Mitt Romney, advocated for and signed into law in Massachusetts years prior...

Addiction & Recovery

I remember it like it was yesterday.  I was very young, maybe eleven or twelve years old, hanging out with a friend at “The Pit.”  The Pit, as we called it, was an old foundation of a house that was dug into the ground.  We made a makeshift roof out of junk wood and metal we had gathered up from our neighborhood.  This became our version of a tree house that we would hang out in and do "kid stuff."

At this point in our young lives, “kid stuff” was gathering up Playboy magazines and stealing beer and cigarettes from our houses and maybe even some of our neighbors' houses.  (Sorry, Mom and neighbors.) Call it boredom, call it fitting in, call it copying adult behavior, or call it small-town living.  Whatever you call it, not every kid did it the...

Generation New Age

In life, we grow. We grow to learn things about the world, about each other, and about ourselves. Sometimes, most of the time, we don’t like to learn these things. But, for seeing them as what they were, what they are, and what they can be is what makes all the difference.

*Note: I know that everything is comparative in experience. I know that what may seem challenging now will be looked back on as the easiest thing I’ve ever had to get through in my life. But….I know that I’m not the only one going through this. I’m certainly not the first one to go through it. And I’m definitely not the last one.*

So what I have grown through in the past few months…

I’ve started that “all-too-real” reality of growing up. Through it all, I’ve begun to see people worked,...

Somebody Asked Me

Dear Readers: Today's advice question comes from one of my students in the CWG Online School, who has recently decided and declared his life calling is to be a "good Samaritan." When I read his response to one of our homework questions, I knew I wanted to share it with all of you in the hopes that you will gain from his experience:

As I was leaving a take-away shop with my dinner recently, I passed a guy who was just sitting on the sidewalk with no shirt on, an unkempt look, a bottle of beer and a shopping bag which seemed to have all his possessions in it. As I walked past he says, “Hey, old mate.” I chose to ignore him, thinking, “I do not need this hassle or want to deal with this at the moment. I just...

Being Human

“Sometimes you open a door, and you are the only one

who can go through it.” —Mooji

There are very few reasons these days that I am inspired to leave the inner sanctuary of silence—to speak, to be with others, or even to write something that in any way expresses an objective opinion. For quite a while now I have been trying in myriad ways to gently explain to those I know and love why I am less available for even the most casual of gatherings…

When we come to a place where we no longer believe everything the man-made mind comes up with and genuinely feel that there is almost nothing worth speaking about unless it is spoken from one’s true home in the Heart, well—it can make for a more confusing and inconsistent exchange with those who still expect us to...

Our Children in These Times of Change

It's a classic parenting situation. You visit a quaint little coffee shop for story time. Another mom or dad walks in and sits next to you while his or her child begins to play with yours. One of you, it doesn't matter who, strikes up a conversation and after a few moments of small talk you begin to find many commonalities. By the end of the story, phone numbers are exchanged and play-dates arranged. We all know the thrill of finding a new friend on the desert island of parenting, especially if you are a stay-at-home parent who doesn't get much adult interaction.

I have heard from numerous readers that frequently on a second or third play-date, a seemingly innocuous question is asked, “Where do you go to church?” Do you have a comfortable answer at the ready or do you...

What Others Are Saying

On April 17, most of America’s wealthiest citizens will no longer be paying Social Security taxes for 2014.

That’s right—The average member of the 1% of wage earners won’t pay into our Social Security system for the last seven months out of the year. Even while Paul Ryan’s new budget proposes new tax cuts for these millionaires and billionaires, they don’t even...

We are inviting you, here in this space, to engage in a conversation (we call it The Conversation of the Century) about what kind of new story we could be telling our children, and each other, about life on Earth in every one of its expressions.

ARE WE FACING A GLOBAL CRISIS?

SPECIAL NOTICE

TO ALL READERS: There is something quite remarkable happening in California's 33rd Congressional District. YOU have a chance to go to Washington, in the person of an individual who may very well be speaking just for you, saying just what you would say, voting just the way you would vote.

Jesse Ventura interviewed this person just a few days ago. This is a brief video interview you will not want to miss if you find the philosophy and the perspective of The New Spirituality even a little nourishing, and the idea of a New Politics even a little compelling.

DOES 'HEAR NO EVIL, SEE NO EVIL' WORK?

There is an idea that has been going around the so-called New Thought community over the past couple of decades that to speak of anything, thereby “giving energy to it,” only serves to “make it bigger.” Therefore, this idea goes, humans should never talk about or “focus on” anything that they believe is not okay in our society, because they are only “spreading negativity” and ensuring that those conditions remain even more firmly in place.

We should only give voice to that which we wish to see expanded in its manifestation and enlarged in our experience, this line of thinking asserts, using as its basis the oft declared New Age principle that “we create our own reality” with the power of our thoughts, words, and deeds.

It is time to debunk this notion once and for all. Holding this idea as sacred can, in fact, be dangerous, by allowing detrimental or damaging aspects of our collectively created life to continue --- often...
