{"id":2707,"date":"2012-11-22T21:32:45","date_gmt":"2012-11-23T02:32:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theglobalconversation.com\/blog\/?p=2707"},"modified":"2012-11-22T21:44:49","modified_gmt":"2012-11-23T02:44:49","slug":"tree-of-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theglobalconversation.com\/blog\/?p=2707","title":{"rendered":"Tree of Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everything taking place within the realm of our experience is subject to the application of our thoughts, perspectives, and beliefs&#8230;which is why you will either deeply appreciate Director Terrence Malick\u2019s movie \u201cTree of Life\u201d or you will leave feeling bewildered.<\/p>\n<p>This 139-minute film has very little dialogue except for the occasional voice-over narration asking enigmatic questions to God like, \u201cWhere were You? \u00a0Where do You live?\u00a0 Are You watching me? \u00a0I want to know what You are. \u00a0I want to see what You see.\u201d\u00a0 This movie does not tell you <em>what<\/em> to think, or<em> how<\/em> to think, but rather it provides the movie-goer an opportunity to think about and actually participate in some of life\u2019s most perplexing and unanswered questions about evolution, God, death, heaven, human connection, the end of the world &#8212; and to become a collaborator in its meaning.<\/p>\n<p>The movie centers around a troubled family in Waco, Texas, in the 1950s where three pre-teen boys are living with their strict authoritarian father (played by Brad Pitt) and gentle loving mother (played by Jessica Chastain), each parent symbolizing a different perspective about the \u201cway\u201d through life\u2026<em>the way of nature<\/em> or <em>the way of grace<\/em>.\u00a0 She is ethereal, a loving presence, angelic; he is a businessman and a traditionalist who is prone to anger.<\/p>\n<p>Awe-inspiring and dramatic cinematography contrasts ideologies of \u201cspirituality\u201d and \u201csurvival of the fittest\u201d within the world of this young family\u2019s triumphs, conflicts, and day-to-day life experiences, connecting them with the birth, evolution, and eventual demise of the universe.\u00a0 Predominantly placed in the film is a breathtaking 15-minute video sequence containing stunning footage of the \u201cBig Bang,\u201d the creation of the earth and the earth\u2019s first organism, the age of the dinosaurs, concluding with the destruction of the earth by a large meteor.<\/p>\n<p>Writing a review for a controversial movie that is so wide open to interpretation is a challenge without sharing what the film personally meant to me.\u00a0 So I would recommend that if you want to experience a movie that will make you say \u201cWow!\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhat?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cHmm,\u201d\u00a0 \u201cAww,\u201d \u201cNo Way,\u201d \u201cOh, I get it,\u201d \u201cWait, I\u2019m confused,\u201d and \u201cAmazing\u201d <em>all at the same time<\/em>, that you check out \u201cTree of Life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTree of Life\u201d can be found on Netflix and is available on video from most movie rental sources.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Lisa McCormack is the Managing Editor &amp; Administrator of The Global Conversation.\u00a0 She is also a member of the Spiritual Helper team at\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.changingchange.net\/\">www.ChangingChange.net<\/a><em>, a website offering emotional and spiritual support.
