IS IT POSSIBLE THAT MUCH OF WHAT WE THOUGHT ABOUT GOD IS WRONG?"},"content":{"rendered":"

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0It’s not a small thing\u00a0to be wrong about God.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>And if nearly everyone on the planet is wrong about God,\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s\u00a0really<\/em>\u00a0not a small thing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0If nearly everyone on the planet has mistaken notions\u00a0<\/span>about God, then nearly everything that everyone on the planet\u00a0<\/span>is doing will not work the way it was intended. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0This is because\u00a0<\/span>the basis of so much of what they\u2019re doing is found in so many\u00a0<\/span>of their beliefs about God.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Think not?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Think again.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Nearly all of civilization\u2019s modern laws emerged from\u00a0<\/span>the early rules and laws of some faith tradition. Nearly all of\u00a0<\/span>humanity\u2019s moral codes derive from the mandates of a religion.\u00a0<\/span>Nearly every political movement and economic theory is\u00a0<\/span>based on ideas of justice, right-and-wrong, and basic fairness\u00a0<\/span>first espoused by spiritual teachers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Even those who don\u2019t believe in God are impacted and\u00a0<\/span>guided by many of the fundamental principles placed into the\u00a0<\/span>Cultural Story by those who do.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0And a striking number of the personal decisions made by\u00a0<\/span>billions of individuals across the globe are made within the\u00a0<\/span>context of what they believe to be the purpose of life, what\u00a0<\/span>they believe happens when this life is over, what they believe\u00a0<\/span>about God, and about what God wants.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0So it\u2019s not a small thing to be wrong about God.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Proposition: Not one of the systems we have put into place to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>make life better on this planet is working.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>Wait. It\u2019s worse.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>Not only have the systems we have put into place failed to\u00a0<\/span>produce the outcomes for which they were intended\u2014they are\u00a0<\/span>actually producing\u00a0exactly the opposite.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>I have made this point before, in a number of books I have written. I believe\u00a0<\/span>it is worth repeating, with emphasis.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>Our political systems are actually\u00a0increasing<\/em>\u00a0disagreement\u00a0<\/span>and disarray. Our economic systems are actually\u00a0increasing<\/em>\u00a0poverty\u00a0<\/span>and the gulf between the rich and the poor. Our ecological\u00a0<\/span>systems are actually increasing environmental degradation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>Our health care systems are actually\u00a0increasing<\/em>\u00a0inequality\u00a0<\/span>of access to modern medicines and health care services. Our\u00a0<\/span>educational systems are actually\u00a0increasing<\/em>\u00a0the knowledge gap.\u00a0<\/span>Our social systems are actually\u00a0increasing<\/em>\u00a0disparity, disharmony,\u00a0<\/span>and injustice.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>And, perhaps saddest of all, our spiritual systems are actually\u00a0<\/span>increasing<\/em>righteousness, intolerance, anger, hatred, violence,\u00a0<\/span>and war.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>If the improvement of human life upon the earth were a\u00a0<\/span>laboratory experiment, it would have long ago been considered\u00a0<\/span>an abject failure.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>Indeed, an appalling disaster.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Not everyone agrees. There are those who believe that humanity\u00a0<\/span>is evolving to higher and higher levels of sophistication and\u00a0<\/span>achievement, producing a better and better quality of life for\u00a0<\/span>all the members of our species.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>It is possible that they would not, however, be among the\u00a0<\/span>842 million people (one in eight in the world) who do not have\u00a0<\/span>enough to eat. It is certain that they would not be the parents\u00a0<\/span>of the over 650 children who die of starvation every hour.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>They would presumably not be among the 20.9 million\u00a0<\/span>women and children who are bought and sold into commercial\u00a0<\/span>sexual servitude every year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>They would also, one imagines, not be among the over\u00a0<\/span>three billion people who live on less than $2.50 a day, or the\u00a0<\/span>billions who have no access to health care. (Some 19,000 children\u00a0<\/span>die each day from preventable health issues, such as\u00a0<\/span>malaria, diarrhea, and pneumonia.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>They would probably also not be among the 1.7 billion\u00a0<\/span>people who lack clean water, or the 2.6 billion without basic\u00a0<\/span>sanitation, or the 1.6 billion people\u2014a quarter of humanity\u2014<\/span>who live without electricity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>That\u2019s right. In the first quarter of the twenty-first century,\u00a0<\/span>2.6 billion people live without toilets, and 1.6 billion without\u00a0<\/em><\/span>electricity.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>How is this possible?<\/em>, you might ask. And that is a very\u00a0<\/span>good question.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>It is an especially good question given that humanity imagines\u00a0<\/span>itself to be a \u201ccivilized\u201d species. To the people in the above\u00a0<\/span>categories, the \u201ccivilization of Civilization\u201d has not even begun.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>A planet where 5 percent of the population owns or\u00a0<\/span>controls 95 percent of the wealth and resources\u2014and where\u00a0<\/span>most of that 5 percent think this is perfectly okay, even as\u00a0<\/span>unconscionable numbers languish in lack and suffering\u2014<\/span>would not seem to be a planet on which a great deal of humanitarian\u00a0<\/span>advancement has been achieved.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>All of this is possible because of the collective values of\u00a0<\/span>those people who can do something about it. And where do\u00a0<\/span>those values come from? I suggest they derive in large part\u00a0<\/span>from the well-intentioned, but mistaken, beliefs about God\u00a0<\/span>held by many human beings\u2014including those who do not\u00a0<\/span>believe in God at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Does anybody care that our species has been such a failure\u2014<\/span><\/span>or why?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>Does anybody imagine it has\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0been?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>Does anybody want to know how this whole situation can\u00a0<\/span>be turned around in the blink of an eye?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>Does anyone want to know how his or her own personal\u00a0<\/span>life can be changed for the better with the embracing of a single\u00a0<\/span>idea?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>Do\u00a0you?<\/em>\u00a0Do you want to know?<\/span><\/p>\n
